Welcome to the ever-exPanding universe of RECKLESS DECK

Looking to supercharge your creativity? Then this card deck series is for you. RECKLESS DECK is a rule-breaking, genre-smashing dose of raw inspiration for artists, creative writers, gamers, and cosplayers alike, whether you’re a seasoned pro, a casual hobbyist, or creative rookie.

I came up with it in the course of my work as a professional illustrator during a period of intense creativity, but also, of limited hours & minutes in which to actually draw. I wanted something that would help me make the most of my moments in the studio, so I could hit the ground running, spending my time working instead of thinking something up. Reckless Deck compiles the best of the defining imagery & objects that recur in sci & fi, fantasy, horror and steampunk genres. Then, it generates endless combinations of weapons, costumes, and character-defining attributes as raw inspiration for never-before-seen characters.

This was originally just a thing for me – begun by poring through stacks of concept art magazines, art annuals, favorite films, and comic books (a stretch of research that was in no way painful, btw.)  But once I started to see the crazy ideas I was producing with it – and felt what seriously was like having some kind of a creative fusion reactor in my hand – I saw the potential of where it could go. (In truth, my wife saw it and pointed it out to me.) This was a thing that could appeal to loads of other artists – but also to writers, gamers, students, kids – really anybody who loves fantasy & sci-fi and wants to be creative. And so, Reckless Deck Volume I was born. We self-produced it, and I began offering it at conventions & shows, as well as online, and eventually, on Amazon.com. But even as it continued to sell consistently well, new ideas for cards kept coming. Not just for a potential sequel volume, but also for an entire series of genre-based expansions. I was beginning to see ways you could customize your deck to make it truly your own, by shaping it to suit your own creative needs. Soon I had a war chest of great unreleased content that made Volume I seem like only the tip of the iceberg.

Which leads us to our spring 2017 Kickstarter. Our main intent was to fund a Volume II – but with over 1,350 backers and $119,000 raised in both Kickstarter and Backerkit, we managed to finance ALL of the ideas: not only the Volume II, but a re-design and re-release of Volume I, a kid’s Deck (Apprentice Pack), an environment deck (Worlds), and eleven expansion packs.

My hope is that once you start dealing out some cards, you’ll immediately begin to see possibilities for characters & environments waiting to be born. RECKLESS DECK is like rocket fuel for the creative process – not only does it remove the roadblock of judgment and second guessing, it also propels you far outside your creative comfort zone. Enjoy spend less time “figuring out”, and more time creating.
