Five Tips For Running A Successful Fansite

large_Extraction-of-Diamonds1

This is lengthy.  This is raw.  This is how I feel about it, and how I have made my stuff successful.  If you don’t want to hear about fansites, you may want to bypass this blog entry all together.  If you want to learn more about them and a little bit behind the scenes information, keep reading.

Fansites have been a double edged sword for me.  A lot of people know this about me, but some of you don’t.  I have been making fansites for the past 15 years, and my main three I have run over the course of those 15 years were very successful, and had an accumulative following of over 100,000 people…  They have all since been defunct, because they kept blowing up in my face.  After I got burned one too many times on the last one I did about 3 years ago, as well as every single other fansite I have worked on has gone down/up in flames, I swore off fansites and told myself it was just not worth the time and energy of making them just to be disappointed.

With all of my shit experiences and my fansites suffering from it, I had someone ask me the other day why I took on another one, and how do I keep up the fansites and make them successful.

First off, this time is different for me.  I am actually working with the celebrity to make this his official likes page on Facebook… NOT a fansite.  Second off, if you even have to ask the question of how do I make it successful, or how I find content for it… you have no business even attempting to make a fansite.

Yes, it sounds harsh.  Yes, it sounds bitchy.  Let me point out why I said what I said.

  1. Be Educated. If you have to struggle to find content for your fan site, you obviously need to do your homework, and make Google your best friend. Google old pictures, movie trailers for actors, old music videos and interviews for musical artists, make up trivia, put up quotes, TV clips, etc – this will drive people to your site, and will get people excited about your site.  Yes, we all know that it is nearly impossible to get fresh, new content for fansites every single day.  That’s where the old content comes into play.  Use the older, “archived” footages to your advantage.

2. Know your subject. This kind of ties into the whole struggling for content. If you are not at all familiar with the subject of your fansite at all, maybe you should reconsider creating a fansite for the subject at hand.  If you are getting paid to do the fansite, then do your research and don’t look like a dillweed giving out half hearted, and half researched, information.  Make sure your quotes come from reliable sources, and your trivia is accurate.

3. Be kind. Yes, there are going to be belligerent fans who think you are the person, and get mad at you when you can’t answer questions or give them the hookup. You will be belittled by people who are jealous of how badass your site turned out to be when it gets successful.  There will be people who are what I like to call fair-weather friends, who want you for their own benefit.  Remember, even if you have no contact with the person your site is representing, you are in a way representing that person.  People sometimes are not the sharpest tools in the shed, and you have to use kid gloves and spell things out for them.  Even if you have it clearly marked that this site is run by fans, there will always be that one person who just doesn’t read, and thinks you’re the person.  Kindly correct them.

4. Be authentic. If you are not yourself, and have to fake a personal to run your fansite, it will go down in flames. I am naturally a talker and a friendly person, however, with working on the fansites over the years like I have, there have been times where I have lost my cool, or I have wanted to reach through the computer and smack the person on the other end.  But, alas, you have to be you – and remember this is YOUR site.  I pour my heart and soul into everything I do, whether it is a fansite or something as simple as this blog.  If you don’t take it personal when someone cuts your site down, you’re doing it wrong.

5. Don’t let people tell you how to run YOUR site. Unless you are working with the person themselves you are creating a fanpage for, do not let other people tell you how to run your fansite, and do not take “partners” on. I cannot stress that enough.  If you take partners on with your site, you will go down in flames because, at one point or another, you WILL have a disagreement with said partner and if you have given them full control over your site, well, I think you’re smart enough to realize if anything goes wrong, whether it be an argument or just something with the site, if you’re not to blame, it’s safe to wave your finger at that other person, and that’s when you see the fighting side of otherwise peaceful people.  Just don’t do it – it’s ugly.

So those are my tips for running a successful fansite.  Do you have any tips?  If you have any questions or comments, feel free to comment and I will do my best to answer any questions.

  1. Interesting article! I am glad to meet another fannie. 😀 I’ve run two different fan sites both of which were when I was a teenager; one which is still around but I haven’t updated it in forever. Flash back to 10-15 years when social media was non existent fan sites and official websites we’re the #1 source to find out all kinds of info; especially for musicians.

Such as new videos, new album info, touring info etc. Artist’s website are structured much differently then than they are now. Anyways, I always been “up to date” before the time of social media but now of days it’s so much harder to be original and not just post thousand’s of links. I’ve only ran musician fan sites, but I did have friends who had other fan sites like the one girl from NCIS.

The very first fan site I ever ran was for a music group called “Soluna” they were a Hispanic girl band composed of four women all from different Latino origins they sung both in English and Spanish; which at the time wasn’t common and what I loved about them.

You might remember their hit song “For All Time” it was released around the time of the 9/11 attacks; actually it was rumored that their first single was changed to this because of the attacks. I was coming home from somewhere and I heard that song on the radio and I was like “OMG, I gotta know who sings that song!” Thank goodness for look back for the particular radio station and I was able to find the name of the group and since that moment I was hooked. I played their CD constantly so making a fan site was naturally common.

It was my first site and on the Tripod free site builder their website, Google and Wikipedia were my best friend putting that together. I would say I was 15-16 at that time, so I was unaware of any copywriting so unfortunately it got shut down upon finishing (Due to adding music when you visited). However; I came back and better than ever. It was a huge site; one of the biggest and most up to date site I could find on them. Unfortunately, they disband a few years later and went their separate ways but that was okay because I found a NEW favorite singer and I still a fan of him today. LOL.

I don’t think my Soluna website is still up but my other website is for an artist called Frankie J is still up, but not up-to-date. So, fan sites can happen but in the world of social media groups and pages are faster and easier to update than websites. Users must know what they can and can’t do in regards of posting audio and video content due to copyright laws. I did at one point have a partner on a fan site that I had; which quickly backfired for reason or another. The said person went on and created their own website…
