Saving With Misty: Garage Sale and Flea Market Tips

While we all like to save money, we all like to make money too.   So, why not clean out all that old junk in your garage and have a yard sale?

Here are some tips and pointers to make your garage sale, flea market, or yard sale a success!

Gathering Items – Getting all that stuff together can be a hassle. Here’s a semi pain free way to do it. Go in your house, go room to room with empty boxes, throw the stuff you want to sell in the boxes and set the boxes aside. Don’t worry about categorizing it while you’re gathering stuff because you more than likely will have like items in different rooms. The best way to do it is to throw stuff in boxes and when you get to your destination, be it the yard, garage, or flea market booth, that’s where the organization starts.

Checking Stuff Online – Before you go and slap a $1 price tag on that item, make sure you do your research on stuff. What might be junk to you, someone might be willing to pay top dollar for online. Sites like Ebay and Amazon for CD, DVD’s and collectables are awesome! If you have vintage jewelry and handmade crafts, try craft and jewelry sites like Etsy, Shopify, and crafstar.

Organization – Perhaps the most important thing to do! The best way to keep your garages/yard/market sales organized is to organize it by category. Here’s how I do it: I take all my stuff to the area that I will be setting it up in, then I set up all my tables and stuff I can display stuff on. Take out my best stuff, put it on the tables, and the not so great stuff put in neat stacks around the place. If it’s clothes, I lay out towels out on the floor and put it by sizes (Now I have a clothes rack so this is not a problem with me anymore). Books, Cd’s and DVD’s I have at a set price; I usually do $1 for opened Cd’s, $2 for unopened and $2 for opened DVD’s and $3 for unopened. Books if they are the nicer collector type books I‘ll price those individually. Hardbacks I put at $1, softbacks, 50 cents, and kids books 25 cents.

When people start rustling through stuff, it will get messed up, however, if you’re on top of the straightening it should not take that much to get it cleaned up. After each wave of people, take five minutes and straighten! It’s all about facings and organization – have your most appealing items in the front, profiled. Once you have it set up and everything priced, just remember – it’s done! Keep it set up for the next time, just add other items to it!!!

Pricing – While the idea of having everything a set price is awesome, there are always going to be those items you want more for.  Unless it is a specific item like Cd’s Dvd’s or Books, always mark stuff with price tags. You can either buy pre-made sticker prices, or you can make your own. Buying blank stickers and making your own prices would be better because it would save you on those multiple prices that you only need a couple of. Also, check your local thrift shops – sometimes people donate labels and the thrift shops will sell them for a fraction of what they retail for!

Lowballers – One more thing you need to keep in mind is you will have people that will be trying to lowball you on your prices. MAJORLY. Everybody is looking for a good bargain, and most of the people who offer you a lower price know what it’s worth, and are just trying to make a profit on it.

What I usually do is start it at a higher price, and if they pick it up to look at it, tell them a lower price. For instance here’s said item you want a dollar for. Put two dollars on it, wait for someone to pick it up. If they look at it then put it back down, say something like “I’ll go down to a dollar on that”.

Talking Items Up – Another thing you need to be careful with is talking items up. Talk them up if someone asks you about it, but don’t talk it up too much or act eager to sell stuff – most of the time people who are too eager to help and get in customer’s faces they just walk away from it rather then deal with the high-pressure sales.

Advertising – There are several online places that will give you the exposure you need to make your Garage/Yard sale a success! Make sure to advertise on your social networks like Twitter, Facebook, My Space, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. on Facebook, you can make a business page if you plan on doing this often. Other great places to advertise online are CraigsList and YardSellar!

As far as your signs in the yard and stuff, make sure they are colorful and eye catching. Have the dates, time, and address on it – being a frequent garage sailor there is nothing more frustrating then having a sign that leads nowhere!  Best thing to do it put your signs up, then drive the path yourself and make sure everything is legible!
