Fandom 101: Act Natural

I was surfing the internet the other day and read this article (http://moviepilot.com/posts/3913183) about how some fans cross the line when meeting celebrities.  I think every fan of anybody needs to read this article and take it to heart.

Yes, I am a fangirl, even a superfan of some, however, my number one rule when meeting people is to ask permission before I even touch them. Keep in mind that while some of these celebrities love fans and are very hands on (I’ve had several kiss me on the cheek, or hug the mess out of me, etc), some of them do not enjoy physical contact with strangers.

Example…

I took this picture with Joey Fatone.  This was not the first time I had met him, and I asked permission before I even hugged him the first time… This time, I told him I wanted to do something cute since I was dressed up as Daisy Jane from Dead 7. Asked him if I could kiss his cheek, he gave me full permission to do so. Barely made contact, and I got a cute picture from it. I told him flat out if he was uncomfortable with it to tell me so and I would not do it. He was fine with it… Now if he had said I’m not comfortable with it, I wouldn’t have done it. If I was not in costume, I would have not even asked.

It’s called respect.

Big difference between what happened here and what is being described and what I did… Celebrities get bombarded day after day with hundreds of thousands of overzealous fangirls, and fanguys, convention after convention, event after event. I’ve witnessed firsthand how creepy and out of line fans can be.

Guys, celebrities are humans, treat them as so.  Yes I understand getting very excited when meeting your favorite celebrity, but make sure that you don’t make them uncomfortable. After all they are human too and they deserve the same respect as every other person when it comes to invasion of personal space.

Please remember that, and stop giving the respectful fans a bad name.
