Celebrity: Dean Cain

Known for:  Lois & Clark: The New Adventures and Ripley’s Believe it or Not

First Encounter: Dragon*Con 2012.

Seriously, whoever thought I would be sitting here telling you about how much I adore and admire Dean Cain with all of my heart and soul?  Not me, that’s for sure.  The first time I met Dean was a few year ago at Dragon*Con 2012 and I knew little to nothing about his career.  I had heard his name and always used to watch Ripley’s Believe it or not and recognized his (gorgeous) face, so I thought to myself, why not get a picture with him?

So, I walked up to his table and observed him with his fans.  I often do this before meeting celebrities, as I have had a few bad experiences and am a bit jaded, so to say, when it comes to meeting celebrities.  I can remember all the way back to when I was 12 (yes, 12) and met one of my favorite boybanders and he was not all what I expected him to be, and to this very day, that encounter runs through my mind.

After observing Dean not only standing up out from behind his table, unlike most celebrities who have a table as a barricade between you and them, I also noticed him hugging fans, and him genuinely smiling and interacting with fans.

Dean was charging $40 for a Polaroid picture with him, one with your camera, and an autograph on the Polaroid.  Keep in mind this is very reasonable for a convention like Dragon*Con.  I have paid upwards of just that much for them to fling their arm around me and send me on my way, which I expected fully for this to happen when meeting Dean.  Boy, was I wrong.

I walked up to him, camera in hand, and asked if instead of me getting both pictures, if my boyfriend could get one of the pictures as well.  He smile and said that would not be a problem at all.

As I stood there slightly starstuck (which never happens to me) by how genuinely nice Dean was, I could not stop smiling as I posed with my cheesy grin for our picture.

During the end of the picture, he started squeezing my shoulders tightly.  Me, kinda still in a little bit of a daze, got “roped” into an amazing hug from this amazing guy.  I giggle as I finished the hug, and he yelled, as if proud of what he accomplished, “AND I got a hug out of it!”

As many celebrities as I have met, there have been few that I can actually say have made me blush.  After this, I added Dean to that list.  I took a picture of him with Zach, and as Dean I was signing the picture, I boasted ‘I’ve met I don’t know how many celebrities and you’re one of very few who made me blush!’

No sooner had those words come out of my mouth, he looks over a Zach, and says “Then I don’t know what she’s going to do when I ask her for her phone number!”

Completely grinning ear to ear, we both shook his hand and moved on with our day.

Second Encounter: Knoxville Fanboy Expo, July 25, 2016

At this convention there were very few people I was willing to pay a bunch of money for an autograph from.  Let me preface the price before I say it.  When you set up at these conventions, different conventions charge different prices, the bigger and more expensive the venue, the more the autographs and pictures are going to cost.  With that being said, I paid $50 this time for an autograph from Dean, and it was worth every penny, once again.

Anyway, on with the encounter.

It’s not that often that I meet someone twice, and pay the price to get autographs twice, but Dean is one of those people whom I did that with at this Expo.  Not only because my mom wanted an autographed picture and had to be left behind in Georgia to take care of my grandmother, but because it’s so much more than just a typical let’s herd you through like cattle and get as many people as I can signatures and pictures without even acknowledging that they are, in fact, human beings.

As I stand in line for two hours waiting for all of the VIP’s to get signatures and pictures, and am still taking note of how much he is interacting with fans, I think to myself this is going to be that one bad experience, as I always do.

So once it was my turn to talk to Dean, I walk up to him, shake his hand, and immediately start talking to him, completely forgetting that I am still holding his hand.  I pause for a second, look down at our hands, smile and look back up at him and slowly let go of his hand, laughing and stating ‘I think I’ll just stand here and hold your hand all day long.’  So Dean gets up from his chair, and loops me into a hug and says “I can do better then that.” Yet again, making me blush and say “That’s what I was fishing for.’

After he settles back down and my picture for mom is in front of him to sign, I told him how I was getting the autograph for my mother and explained to him briefly about how we have to take turns going to conventions because someone has to stay home and watch Grandma.  After him asking me a few details about things at home, he signed my mother’s picture “I’ve heard you’re a Super Mom.”, personalized it, and I handed him a business card with my blog information on it, he smiled and actually took time to acknowledge my tagline on my business card.

When you meet Dean Cain, you don’t just meet Dean Cain.  You are there for an experience.  He treats his fans like family, and he will never know how much that means to us.  There are so many people out there who forget where they come from, and I love that even with all the fame, Dean still makes you feel special and takes time to meet fans at these type of conventions.

I may not have been that big of a “fan” before I met him, but after the 2012 meeting, meeting him again July 25th and having him be just as genuine, he has gained a new fan for life.
